Why isn't varnish good for your oak barrel?

The Porous nature of an oak barrel allows for some levels of evaporation and micro oxygenation to occur in wine or spirits. Tannins from the oak will then be release allowing the subtle oaky flavor to change the color and taste of your favorite wine or spirit. a lacquered barrel is neither porous in nature causing neither evaporation or micro oxygenation to occur. Once varnished, the tannins become contaminated ruining your wine or spirits.
There are many oak barrels out there that are varnished for good looks. The truth is that a varnished barrel is only a decorative barrel with the potential to destroy your wine or spirit and even harm you or your family's health. Instead of enhancing the flavor of your wine or spirit, the final outcome could be a cabernet with a hint of lacquer!

Don't be fooled by other coopers or distributors of oak barrels. Don't waste your money, ask before purchasing an oak barrel.
